New invitations are up in the shop

I think it was last week when I showed up a sneak preview of a variation on my Peter Pan invitations for Jude’s party. It’s amazing to me that there are never-ending solutions to any design “problem.” I think that’s what drew me to design initially.

Lauren contacted me through Etsy. She had found my original Peter Pan invitations and liked them, but was throwing a joint birthday party for her son and daughter and needed, in her words “More pixies and more pirates.” But her other caveat that it was not to be too babyish for her six year old boy, or too charactery overall. Quite the challenge! I sent her three different proofs — here are two of them:
Peter Pan 2.pdf @ 200% (CMYK/Preview)

Peter Pan 3.pdf @ 125% (CMYK/Preview)

The first proof was based on the image in the movie when Captain Hook’s pirate ship is overtaken by Peter & the Lost Boys and Tinkerbell turns it to gold.  The second proof was more of a storybook feel with the typography.

So the final choice was … (drumroll please!)

Golden pirate ships! And in 6 year old Teddy’s words, “I like that one because the pirate ship is the biggest!!”

Curry-colored envelopes matched the invitation, and were sealed with customized return address labels.

To wrap it all together, we did 2 versions of custom favor tags that could also be used as cupcake toppers.

So so fun!  Thank  you, Lauren, for letting me help out with your kids’ big day!  I can’t wait to see photos.

Are you planning a Peter Pan or Neverland party for your kiddos?  I just added all of these items to my shop!

Latest Invitations

I finally got around to shooting photos of some of the birthday and shower invitations I’ve done lately for clients. I’ve also got them up in the shop as well.  You guys have been so overwhelmingly supportive and excited about my etsy launch and I couldn’t be more thankful! Thank you so very much!

These polka dot invitations were for a baby (boy) shower. I think this invite is particularly cute in a multi-color dot.  And the typography here is such a delicate match. Love it. The mom to be did too!

And of course I am loving this dramatic, fun houndstooth pattern paired with Narziss Swirls. The perfect pair!

Designs can be found here at Pencil Shavings Paper.

As seen on: Invitation Crush

Thank you to Invitation Crush for featuring my Thomas the Train invitations on their blog today! That was a happy surprise. I’ve had a good time combing through the blog there and seeing so many amazing invitations. There’s so much talent out there, it’s almost overwhelming sometimes!

All of these images and others are found at InvitationCrush.

The return address on these envelopes is stunning.

I saw these on Pinterest, and they are nothing short of marvelous. The attention to detail on these is perfect. And when you look at the whole invitation suite together … ::sigh::

Cute and quirky 1st birthday invitation.

Sneak Peek: Peter Pan Invitations

Got the invitations out and into the mail today for Jude’s Peter Pan party at the end of the month!

I shot this photo against dark green felt, but the felt didn’t show up. I’m planning on cutting up the felt into small leaves to sew onto Jude’s Peter Pan costume pants.

I love the way these turned out. My original concept was something sketchy and hand-drawn in feel, and dramatic like a vintage movie poster or a simple book cover — and I feel like these answer those demands perfectly.  One of my favorite things is the Peter Pan hat that we got Jude at Disneyland this past summer. He’s so stinkin’ cute in it with that jaunty red feather – it’s the perfect symbol of Peter Pan.

So I knew that it was going to be the right image when I was doing sketches of it the other night and Jude saw it and shrieked, “My Peter Pan party!!! That’s my party!”  Bingo.

The hat sketch and matching text is paired with Mrs Eaves, a simple yet pretty font that looks so bookish to me. It reminds me of old-fashioned book typography.

The envelopes are Paper Source’s kraft paper envelopes and the return address labels are also their printable circle labels in white. The envelopes and invitations are extra-large, adding to their dramatic quality.

The labels come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are perfect for return address labels, decorations, you name it.  These are the 2 1/4″ circular stickers. I love that you can get them in any of Paper Source’s signature colors – there’s not an ugly one in the bunch. Would somebody please order some invitations from me in the new Peacock blue color so I can get some of it???  :)

Can’t wait for the big day!

Invitations for Uptown Kids’ VIP Party

I keep forgetting to post photos from Uptown Kids’ VIP party. The invitations turned out really cute. We did a z-fold square invitation inside of a red square envelope and they turned out just as I had envisioned them, like a little handheld subway map.

Here’s a video that their PR people did for them the day of the Grand Opening Carnival.

I need to upload some other photos, but just haven’t had the time. School starts tomorrow for Jude so my work time will finally open back up again!
