Stationery Academy

The Stationery Academy

Eight years ago, I was working as an in-house designer for a teeny tiny apparel company (tiny! party of 3!) called Pink Sugar. I designed our website, clothing line, and any printed materials such as line sheets, etc. It was exciting and overwhelming because I was in a creative industry but frankly, we were flying by the seat of our pants. Every. Single. Day. There was no oneto turn to for advice; those in the industry that we did know were tight-lipped, backstabbing, and not interested in helping out anyone but themselves. Blogs and online communities hadn’t hit the mainstream yet and that spirit of collaboration and sharing the wealth of knowledge was nonexistent.

A year later, I left Pink Sugar and began freelancing as a graphic designer. I dabbled in stationery and made my bread & butter by doing identity projects, collateral materials, etc. It was exciting, but a lonely time. Again, lots of flying by the seat of one’s colorful pants. I think I’ve said it before, but the internet has changed the community for independent designers. The world is smaller, and we are less closed off to opportunities. Other designers are willing to share their expertise and help others along their way.

That’s why I’m excited about participating in this year’s Stationery Academy. Launched in 2011 by my friend Whitney English Kolb, the Stationery Academy is an intensive workshop experience for creative entrepreneurs who are interested in the paper industry. I first heard about it last year and I thought, “YES! That is something I want to be a part of!” So when Whitney contacted me about – gasp! – being a speaker at the Stationery Academy, I about fell out of my chair and laid in a stupor for a good 30 minutes. Uhh, where do I sign up? YES YES YES!

I’ll be speaking about launching and managing your Etsy business at this year’s Stationery Academy and I simply cannot wait. I am so excited to pass on any wisdom from my experience and to hear from other designers as we are all empowered and inspired to pursue our passion for paper. If you’re a designer who loves paper and dreams of running your own paper company, this is the conference you need to be at.

From the website:

New Series: Follow Friday

If you’re a Twitter user, then the concept of Follow Friday (#FF) is nothing new to you. I love the idea of promoting other bloggers & companies that I adore, and Twitter is a great way to do it. BUT sometimes I want to be able to spend a little more time checking out individual bloggers, and when I’m on the go, Twitter isn’t the best way to do it. So I want to introduce a new series here on the blog for Fridays.  My goal is to have a theme for each week; today’s will focus on the topic of branding & marketing in the creative industry. Here’s some of my favorite bloggers who know how to talk shop.  Enjoy your weekend & check out some new reading material.

Current Project: Speakeasy

It’s been awhile since I’ve shown a project that wasn’t related to my Etsy shop in some way. I’ve been so busy running my own show that I haven’t had time for many other outside projects!  This was a postcard invitation that I got to design for the OKC Orchestra League’s Symphony Show House. Every year they do an “undecorated party” where people can view the current year’s decorator’s show house in its “before” state.   Simon is the chair this year for the party, and it will be housed in an absolutely gorgeous 1920s-era house in Heritage Hills.

Simon’s been working really hard on pulling it all together to make it better than ever before. Not only will there be a variety of ah-mazing silent auction items, but he’s managed to lure several local chefs (from restos like Ludivine, Rococo, Stella, etc.) into participating as well. I LOVE supporting local businesses, and we have some exceptional restaurants here, so it’ll be exciting to see how it comes together.

The goal of the invitation was to give the idea of a theme without going overboard cheezy. So often themes can get out of control! I wanted the invitation to express the feel of the 1920s without blatantly screaming “FLAPPERS!!!” It was fun to experiment with a variety of type styles to get just the right mix of vintage and modern.  For budget reasons, we went with a postcard design and included pertinent details on the reverse.

Invitation-o-rama!

It must be time to get back in the swing of things because people are having parties!  I love getting custom commissions and I got the opportunity to do two different baby shower invitations, one right after the other.

For baby Bennett’s shower, the hostesses were doing the cutest bow tie theme.  So preppy and sweet with bright colors, but not necessarily just all baby blue. These reflected that same preppy feeling they were going for, but with modern details.  I need to get these up in the shop, but should have them there shortly.  As always, colors can be customized for your particular event.

The second shower invitation I did was for another baby boy who will be coming home to an adorable striped nursery, which we used as a stylistic theme for these.

I offered her a variation in the icons we could do in lieu of a silhouette (although she did end up going with the silhouette in the end).  I think some of the color variations shown below are fun, too.  These are available in the Etsy shop here.
