Hammam Towels

One of my newest obsessions is the hammam towel. Hammams are Turkish steam baths and are popular in Europe.  Featured earlier this spring in West Elm, I was immediately attracted to the lightweight texture and chic stripe patterns.

Then when we were in Paris, we stumbled upon some others at the Conran Shop and it was all I could do to keep from grabbing a handful and stuffing them in my suitcase.

But I was recently introduced to the gorgeous hamman towels of Etsy seller hamamhouse. The colors are soft and soothing and come in a wider variety of shades than I’ve seen before.

How about you? Would you trade in your terry cloth for these sleek, chic hammam towels?

France – Fun Shops

Ok, just a couple more posts on France.  I wanted to share some of our favorite places to check out in Paris specifically. To be honest, we did more window-shopping than purchasing.  The exchange rate is just so terrible for the dollar right now, and things that formerly were found to be inexpensive in Europe versus the States (such as European brands), were actually cheaper here in the US.

Despite falling madly in love with everything at the flea markets, I didn’t come away with anything more than this delightful little children’s book. The illustrations were so beautifully designed and printed. The saturation of the ink is stunning. I thought it would be cute for the baby’s room if it’s a girl. :)

Another favorite French brand is Les Toiles du Soleil, a gorgeous line of heavy fabrics in a variety of colorful stripes. I had the hardest time picking out what to buy because I honestly love every single fabric they offer.  I wish I’d taken a few photos in the shop; they had the most magnificent drum light shades you’ve ever seen in your life.

I came away with a couple of remnant rolls of fabric that I might use for pillows or table runners as well as one of their little trays.  You’d think I was having to make the hardest decision of my life the way I pored over which pattern to buy.

Their New York store has a site complete with online shopping. I’m dying over the iPad cases.  ::swoon::

Another new favorite was concept/department store Merci. I’d seen it written up at StephModo’s blog and others, and I was really glad we made the trip to the 3rd arrondissement to check it out. Complete with the most darling little cafe, it’s 3 floors full of marvelous housewares, jewelry, furniture, clothing, and more. There’s a variety of price points. I came away with a couple of cute blank journals. Don’t miss the entrance into Merci — it’s hidden away in a courtyard, but you won’t miss their cute little red car in the center.

Finally, my alltime favorite kids’ shop was the new-to-me Bonton. I nearly died and went to baby/kids clothes heaven. The price point was ridiculously out of my budget, but wow — sheer perfection. Simon and I noticed several times all the cute little kids in France. Most were perfectly dressed in the chicest little outfits in soft, subtle colors. No animal appliques or weird slogans. The clothes were all something that I would have wanted to wear — kinda like J.Crew’s Crewcuts.

BONTON: Baby clothes, Kids clothes, Children furniture, Newborn Baby Gift, linen and toys.

So there you have it — a little bit of windowshopping a la francais!

Interior Inspiration

Recent interior faves.  I’ll admit it – I’m feeling a little dry on inspiration these days.  Overexposure? Maybe.  I guess I just want to see something fresh and new.

First Day of School

Somebody was just a little bit excited about starting “school” (mother’s day out) today.

He wanted to put his shoes on last night in preparation for the new school year. It isn’t the first year he’s gone to MDO, but this year we’re at a different school, and I think I was nervous about how the transition was going to go. When I dropped him off, he didn’t even look my way, just plunged on ahead into his room.  I’m happy to say that it was a super successful first day, and Jude happily chattered the whole way home about “MY NEW SCHOOOOOL!” His little report card of the day’s activities said that he was “an A+++ precious angel baby.” Haha. Love it.

In anticipation, I did a little upgrade to Jude’s nap mat. It was pretty dirty from last year, so I just tossed it into the washing machine and it came out fine. I had covered it last year with fabric from an Ikea kids’ duvet cover that I loved the print of.

This year, I attached a pillow and I made a duvet cover for his favorite blankie, this super-soft mini-comforter. Every time he drug it to school last year, I was semi-embarrassed because it’s just so stinkin’ huge. But it makes him feel happy and secure, so okay.

I tacked down the pillow onto the nap mat so it wouldn’t be an extra piece to keep track of.

I have leftover washable care labels from my days in the apparel industry, so I sewed one onto the mat upside down and wrote his name on the back of it.

Once you’ve got the mat wrapped up, it’s kinda bulky what with the pillow on top, and then with the blanket folded on top of that. I felt a little silly dragging it all into the school building today until I saw EVERY other mother lugging in even larger sleeping bags and nap mats. I mean serious fluffy contraptions. I didn’t feel quite so bad then.

The good news is that I have a ton of fabric left over to tackle other fun little projects with. My only gripe with this fabric is how thin, and slightly rough, it is. I know it’s IKEA and all but it just isn’t super high quality (surprise, surprise). But even for Ikea, you know?

Thankfully one of the reusable totes I designed for Uptown Kids is the PERFECT size for his nap mat w/ attached pillow and blankie!

All in all, an excellent start to the year. Now summer REALLY feels over!
