Why I like blogging

Artwork
Life is all about relationships.  College — design school, in particular — was so enjoyable to me because of the like-minded community of designers I was surrounded with every day. We were always questioning each other, sharpening each other — iron on iron.  So when I got booted out into the real world as the single designer in a small apparel company and then my subsequent jump to freelancing, I was lonely. There was no one to bounce ideas off of and there was no Twitter, no blogs, no nada. Or if there was, I didn’t know about it.  This was (gulp) seven years ago and the internet was a different place.  You certainly didn’t admit to anyone in real life that you talked to people on the internet.  It just sounded … weird.  The response you’d get is: “Well, it’s probably a shady old dude living in a shack in the mountains posing as a hip young designer.  It’s only a matter of time before you’re found out and axe murdered.”
All that to say, I love what social media and blogging has created, especially for the freelance designer in the past few years. There is community – there is corroboration — there is friendship spouting up where maybe there wouldn’t have been otherwise.  In the past two years especially, I have been overwhelmed at how happy I am in my freelancing role.  I even said to Simon a few weeks ago, “If only these tools had been around when I got started, I wouldn’t have been so depressed!”
So, once I started meeting up with other Twitterers & bloggers in real life, I was so excited.  We have the best community of bloggers here in Oklahoma City and once again, I feel that connectivity between creative minds that I’ve been missing since college.
A few weeks ago, I got to together with Danielle for a playdate w/ our boys and she brought up the idea of doing a blogger’s night out. I’d previously had a really fun brunch a few months back with a few other bloggers and since then, our scope has only widened.  We organized a Blogger’s Night Out at Cheever’s this past Friday night, and it was such a success.  We even managed to get several local businesses involved and once again, I was blown away.  One of my passions is supporting local businesses and I believe  much of that is forging good relationships w/ the owners.  For example, I’ve loved getting to know Susan Kropp, who owns Chirps & Cheers in Edmond. Susan is so perky and positive, and she has excellent style. Her shop is divine, and I thought she would be a perfect business to include. She blew me away with her generosity and adorable goodies AND she even wants to host us at her shop one night.  And that was just the beginning of the generosity.  Carolyn (my sister-in-law who owns Uptown Kids) donated these awesome Aden+Anais blankets to each & every one of us. Too too generous.
Anyway.  All that to say, I REALLY hope we all get together soon because it was just too much fun.  And I also hope that we add more great bloggers to our ranks!

Loving: Partners & Spade

When we were in NYC a few weeks back, I made it a point to visit several of J.Crew’s specialty shops. It’s J.Crew heaven there. Seemingly their creative director Jenna Lyons is the one who receives most of the praise, and rightfully so. But lately their menswear has been ramping up.  The creative genius behind some of their advertising & menswear store design is Partners & Spade …  Spade, as in, Andy Spade, husband of the delightfully stylish Kate Spade. I really enjoyed perusing Partners & Spade’s website, and seeing so many inspiring images. Quirky, whimsical, and they tell a story.

The Liquor Store is one of J.Crew’s concept stores for guys. That logo is so simple and masculine.

Of course they would have some hand in Kate Spade’s projects as well, including their logo.  I love this ad image.

Some identity projects from Partners & Spade. Again, simple simple simple. But still compelling.

They also have a storefront with a wide variety of found objects, books, etc.

Working Class Studio

Working Class Studio is a division of the Savannah College of Arts & Design and has a really interesting site chock full of amazing student work as well as other items from alumni and faculty. It’s really amazing to see the scope of products they offer. I was checking out their ecommerce site and then was lured to their main site. I am really in love with the Ben Collection of melamine dishes. Reasonable price points and just different than the average stuff you might find at any ol’ place around the country.

Some cool funky clocks, too -

Altitude Design Summit – Home

So, the Alt Design Summit sounds like something I would want to go to. Totally. It’s a conference for design bloggers. And. AND! It’s held at the same time as the Sundance Festival. Does it get any cooler than this?

According to their site, you should attend Alt if you fit any of the following criteria:

- People that love talking about design in all its iterations. What it is. How it’s changing. Why it’s important. (Check.)
- People that read sites like Apartment Therapy/drive German cars/subscribe to magazines from Europe. (Check – well, that Apartment Therapy part)
- Design or lifestyle bloggers who want to (finally!) meet their fellow design and lifestyle bloggers. (Check. That’s right. I’m a stalker.)
- People from across all the design disciplines: graphic, industrial, fashion, interior, product, textile. Plus illustrators and photographers too. (Check.)
- Business Owners who make pretty things and want to figure out how to get their products on design sites. (Erm, ok, not me, but interested in learning about this kinda stuff!)
- Advertising Agencies and Marketing firms that want help creating social media campaigns for their design-minded clients. (Not exactly me either, but I’m sure it would be educational nonetheless, n’est-ce pas?)
- Employees who would love to get credit for working while actually hitting the slopes. (I think this fits Simon, so ok, check.)
- People who create inspiration boards. (Check!!!)
- People who look at inspiration boards. (Check! Is anyone still checking?)
- Big-Love fans that want to find out if polygamy is for real. (Um, no. Not me. We can’t win ‘em all.)
- Star-struck film fans obsessed with the Sundance hype who want to spend a weekend celebrity sighting.  (Ok, who are we kidding – check.)
Now, will childcare be provided?? Just kidding. Kinda.
Doesn’t this sound like fun, though? I’m thinking super fun.
