Sparkle

In junior high, I bought a pair of the gaudiest Mary Janes you’ve ever seen in your life. They were coated in a thick layer of silver glitter. Crunchy, flaky silver glitter. And I loved them. I wore them to school with all kinds of goofy stuff. I’m sure I was a junior high train wreck, but I did love those shoes. I kinda wonder if my mom still has them hidden away somewhere. They’d be fun to have now for costumes and such.

Anyway, in Dallas last weekend, I was checking out the sale merch at Neiman’s and there were these Stuart Weitzman flats that were identical in glitter to my ol’ MJs.

Brought a tear to my eye.

Ok, not really. But it did make me smile.

Learn from Me: Take a tape measure

Friends,

Allow me to impart my knowledge to you. This knowledge has been carefully retained from my experience, and  - yes, yes! – my mistakes. Allow me to save you from a similar fate.

Or as my husband, in good spirits,  is happy to call it: “I told you so.”

Back story: Last week when we met with Lauren Corbyn, I told her that I was adamantly against our green chairs. They have served us well and were gifted to us from my sister, by whom they were gifted to her by the previous owner of her house. They were custom made for the living room of the house they bought. Covered in an extremely large-scale blue chenille plaid, they were … special. When we updated them in green, it was a definite improvement, but I was not interested in putting any more money into the chairs post-hailOrama. Simon disagreed; he likes the size of the chairs. He thought they were just fine.  But he graciously acquiesced to my desire. However, as my husband is a deal hunter DeLux, we had to find something that was reasonable, which can be sometimes so hard to do when it comes to furniture shopping.

Divergent thought: why is ugly always cheaper than pretty? You can find an utterly heinous couch for $200 anywhere.

As we live in Oklahoma City where it sometimes feels our only option is Mathis Brothers (ick), we hopped on the road down to Dallas for a little getaway weekend to check out a few things we had seen online in person. West Elm had a great option at a fairly reasonable price. And this was exactly the shape I was going for – color, too.

And, to our surprise, Pottery Barn had this lovely pair on floor sample sale. Insanely comfortable and of a better quality than the West Elm chair, we were intrigued. Big time. But my stain-resistant husband had an issue with the white upholstery. And in reality, so did I. Even though I swore I would scotch-gard the heck out of ‘em.

No go. Plus, I worried they might be a wee bit too small. You know – because were DOWNsizing.

Lauren also recommended that we check out the Wisteria Outlet, which was ah-mazing. Truly. If you are a Wisteria fan, get thee to the outlet which is also their main shipping hub for the regular catalog. They had some amazing deals, including some gorgeous X-benches that I could barely take my eyes off of. While there was no chair purchase, there was the purchase of a $15 rectangular lampshade for the living room. $15! A steal!

Since we were also in the neighborhood, Simon wanted to visit The Dump, where they have finds such as this (sarcasm – MUCH MUCH sarcasm)

The Dump describes themselves as “We buy overstocks, one-of-a-kinds, factory sell outs, showroom models, design prototypes, all brand new, first quality merchandise, at prices – 30,40, 60% off and more. The stuff regular stores don’t even want you to know about.” And it’s true – they have all kinds of things – while the rug above is heinous, they have all kinds of furniture and of varying quality and designers. I saw amazing Ralph Lauren furniture as well as some really awful pleather couches. You just never know what you’re going to find.

Gorgeous red Hollywood Regency-esque table? OH YES. It’s just missing one of its pulls.

Bamboo chair like you’ve seen in every major design blog and magazine? $150!!! I’m still kicking myself that I didn’t buy this. I just don’t have anywhere for it. ::sigh::

And then – THEN! Yes! Chairs!

And there were TWO of them! WOOT!

So, after about two hours of haggling, negotiating, and testy nerves, the chairs were ours. But we then had to get a UHaul to get them home.

OF COURSE we had to get a UHaul. Simon was not too thrilled. Nerves were fried, patience was stretched – somebody whose name starts with S does NOT like backing up a UHaul trailer, and I cannot blame him.

Items in mirror are closer than they appear. And larger.

The really awful ugly casino on the border of Oklahoma & Texas. Gee, wow, WELCOME to Oklahoma. Tacky w/ a capital T!

And then we get home and drag the chairs into our house from the Uhaul. And as we lug them into the living room, THEY ARE THE SAME SIZE AS THE GREEN CHAIRS I COMPLAINED ABOUT.

I MEAN C’MON!!!!!

I cried. I really did. Simon laughed and laughed and laughed, and then gave me a big ol’ hug and told me how much he likes our new chairs. I felt a little bit better.

And then somehow he got me to agree to have a garage sale here next weekend (more on that later).

Moral of the story: Take a TAPE MEASURE with you to the furniture store!

Or, just take Simon.

Dallas October Getaway

I hope you guys had a great weekend! We were able to steal away with my parents for their first (non-medical) trip in months. They were gracious enough to go down to Dallas with us to take care of Jude while Simon and I went to the wedding of an old friend.

The wedding was really beautiful. My best friend growing up was Sarah. We called each other Sarah Boo and Rachel Boo, and we were quite the pair. Her older sister Lauren met a really lovely guy (a doctor!) and they fell in love and were kind enough to invite us to their wedding. I don’t think I’ve seen them in over 12 years. It’s been a LOOOONG TIME!

The wedding was in a house called the iPlace. It’s like a retreat or conference center for church administrators. The property was gorgeous, but it had unfortunately decided to pour rain that day, so everything had to be moved inside. It was still absolutely beautiful. Definitely one of the most different weddings I’ve ever been to.

Sarah and I.

The lovely bride, Lauren.

Sitting at the dinner table. The food was delicious!

Here they are during the ceremony. Her Dad, Don, did the ceremony. He was our music minister  at our church when I was growing up.

The house was so charming. A great place for a party.

Ready for a night out on the town!

Other funny pictures from the weekend…

Ok, I don’t know what face I am making in this picture, but we have just cracked up at it all weekend. Jude was in dire need of a nap at this point on Saturday afternoon.

Please let me sleep!!!

Jude in the bathtub at the hotel – more on that later.

Simon and Dad. Dad is showing off his new shampoo purchase that promises to add body and life to his hair. :)

mmmm, don’t these look amazing?

Jude eating a chocolate donette. One of my guilty pleasures.

I love a good Halloween ROUS (rodent of unusual size).

Oh horrors!

Dad, practicing his scared face. Hahaha

Jude, in a tender moment.

Jude’s little Heavenly Crib – it had little cloud sheets and a little cloud rug to stick in front of it. He loved it and felt really special in it. We sat there in the windowseat and looked at some of his books that I brought from home.

If it weren’t for my parents and their awesome generosity, we wouldn’t have been able to make this trip down so fabulously. We stayed in an amazing hotel – the Westin at the Galleria. It’s been recently remodeled, but by the grace of God we were able to get a killer deal on a suite for us. It was nice because we also had access to their concierge level, which means free snacks all day. And when you’ve got a busy toddler, free snacks at all hours are imperative.

The room had two bathrooms – this one was maybe my favorite. That blue and green tile was awesome. Isn’t the sink gorgeous?

The living room with a pull-out couch.

The “master” bath. Impressive! Gorgeous tilework, and an amazing carrara marble vanity.

Did you SEE that bathtub? I can’t remember the last time I’ve gotten in a bathtub, and I got in this one twice. It was that good.

And of course, the most amazing Westin Heavenly Bed. There are pocket doors on either side of the bed that lead into the living room.

Jude, checking out the fancy digs.

Mom and Dad, you spoiled us rotten this weekend. We love love love you and are so thankful for you! More than anything, I’m just so grateful that Mom is up to traveling and being back to normal! Thank you for all the food, snacks, drinks, goodies, toys, etc., that you just lavished upon us. We can only hope to pay you back in some way!  xoxoxoxoxox

I love my cousins & they love me too

I really think I have the best nieces and nephews ever, all six of them. I’m reminded of this every time we all get together and hang out. They’re all just such good kids, and they get along so well. Each and every one truly loves each other, and it delights me to see how much they dote on Jude.  Plus he totally eats it up; he can’t get enough of them. The girls love on him, the guys tote him around. It’s just the best. I really enjoyed taking pictures of Jude with Luke and Blythe this weekend at lunch. They were just too funny, kissing on Jude, hugging him, patting his head. Then there was a rousing game of peekaboo, always a crowd pleaser. Hope your weekend was great! I took off a little early last week for our Girls+Jude Mid-Week trip to Dallas where we shopped, ate, and slept to our hearts content. There was also copious consumption of gelato. Hey, mommas need their dairy, right? Christa and Julie were troopers to put up with me and Jude, who really was a good little traveler, albeit a crabapple from time to time. I would probably have fussed too if i had had to go shopping nonstop. Wait, no, I wouldn’t.

Anyway, I picked up some knobs at Anthropologie for the Ikea cabinet in our bedroom, as well as for the upstairs bath. So excited – such an inexpensive way to turn something around. And there was another trip to Ikea, and I got a few more of those cheapo floating shelves. I think they’ll look cool upstairs in the bonus room.

On Saturday, we enjoyed a birthday party for a couple of my cousin George’s kids at Pump It Up. We grabbed lunch w/ my sibs over at Cafe Plaid in Norman and then headed on home for a deelightful afternoon nap. Sunday was church, lunch, and another nap!
