Hello, Monday. Nice to see you.

Friends, can I just tell you how much I adore my husband? I love a man who wants to whisk me away for a grownups-only getaway that involves shopping, sleeping til 10am, copious amounts of food, and desserts on demand.  I love that he appreciates the value of getting away – just the two of us.

When we go to Dallas, we almost always get our hotel via Priceline. Inevitably we end up at the exact same Westin hotel. Every time.  We have a storied history at this particular hotel: this was the same hotel we stayed at when he asked my parents’ permission to marry me. I had no idea what was going on, but I did think it was suspicious when my mom tearily wanted to take our picture in front of the (otherwise unassuming) hotel.   Then there was the time when the scrapbooking convention was there, and Simon made the biggest Freudian slip when he said to one of the scrapbooking ladies, “Oh, I didn’t know there were that many crapbookers. I MEAN SCRAPBOOKERS!”

Then another time, we went down to celebrate our wedding anniversary when I was pregnant with Jude. As we headed back to the hotel to dress for dinner, we noticed lots of fire engines. I mean a bunch. And as we got closer, the fire engines were all based at our hotel. And wouldn’t you know it, the fire was on OUR FLOOR. All I could imagine was my curling iron being left on. COULD IT BE?!?!?! As it turned out, someone had thrown a cigarette into one of the fake plants sitting by the elevators. Poor Simon – he’d already endured a pregnant woman meltdown at A Pea in the Pod over all the ugly clothes and my ever-expanding waistline.

So it should have come as no surprise to us this time when it turned out there was – of all things – an accordion convention. Friday night as we came back from dinner, we were greeted with a live concert, no less. I swear the tears streamed down our cheeks as we cracked up at the craziness of it all.

Highlights of the trip include exploring the original Neiman Marcus in downtown Dallas, getting my hair done at The Dry Bar (OMG!), shopping for new light fixtures (can’t wait to show you!), accidentally buckling my seatbelt into the belt I was wearing, treating Simon to a 3-hour meal at Rise No. 1 (souffles!), and cake balls. LOTS of cake balls.

Goings-On

Summer is in full swing here. The temps are soaring into the 90s and the humidity is finally here. (Yuck.)  But I’m grateful for a pretty patio to enjoy.

My cousins will recognize this green cup.  My grandmother Blanche had a set of these green plastic glasses. One in particular was really warped, I think from the dishwasher getting too hot or something.  Anytime we’d go to Grandmother’s house, the race was on to see who would get the warped glass first.  When she passed away, several of us each got one glass. I have no idea who got the warped one. Warped Glass Owner, will you please come forward?  Anyway, I cherish my one Grandmother Blanche green glass.

I heart espadrilles.  The ones on the left are Ked’s and the ones on the right are from the first Tory Burch collection released back around 2004 or 2005.

Summer is for jumping on the trampoline with cousins.

Matthew’s snazzy new guitar – so glossy and stylish.

All of the cousins participated in a charity fashion show featuring clothes from Uptown Kids a couple of weeks ago.  The highlight was seeing baby Piper who actually made 3 trips down the runway; she was so amped to be in front of a crowd!

Flamingoes at the Dallas Aquarium.  We went to visit my friend Julie & her little boy Jameson last week.  Julie lives in a fab high rise overlooking downtown Dallas.

Here’s the pool at her place. Um, can I move in? It’s like living in a fab hotel.

Are you ready for summer? Admittedly I am less than thrilled to get into a swimsuit yet!

Springtime in Texas

Ohhh how I love this time of year! The grass is colorful and alive again; the trees are such a pretty shade of new green. In Dallas, things are much greener than they are in Oklahoma. On Saturday night, after an enormous dinner at Buca di Beppo, we went for a family walk in Turtle Creek to the Bear Park.

Can you imagine living in such a beautiful place?

Cousins.  Love these boys!!

Isn’t it idyllic?

After you cross the bridge, there’s a tiny park against the water with giant (granite?) bears to climb on.

I totally love this one –

I have zero idea why Simon is kneeling in ths photo. Or why Jude is holding a big stick that came dangerously close to my eye numerous times. Thank you, Lord, for my (intact) eyeball.

Whooooo those are some white legs, girlfriend! Time to see some self-tanner on those puppys!

I love these photos of mom and dad, too.

I am so glad spring is here!

My weekend

Somehow Mondays seem entirely tolerable when the weather is lovely, the air is crisp, and the occasional thunderstorm rumbles through. I spent a great weekend in Dallas with my birth mom, Kim. We took the opportunity to have a girls’ weekend getaway, and it was just so much fun.

Kim and I were reunited two years ago, via Facebook of all places, and after chitchatting via email, etc., we met up for lunch and then we just never looked back. We live a few miles apart, and it has been nothing but wonderful to get to know her, her husband and awesome boys (who are in college), and my biological grandparents. Every single one of them is precious to me.  Our story is so distinctive and so special, and it just reminds me that God has interwoven our lives in such a marvelous way. His plans are not like our plans; His ways are not like our ways. And inevitably, His plan is always better than the plan we could make up for ourselves. I was adopted at birth and had such a marvelous growing-up and the best parents ever, and then after Jude was born, I had a very strong desire to tell my birth mom just how thankful I am that not only did she choose life for me, but that I was also so very much in awe of the most enormous sacrifice that she had made. I cannot imagine giving up a child. There are no words for that. She’s so so brave, and I am so proud to be a part of her.  My parents were super supportive of me getting in touch with Kim, and they spoke often about Jude and how similar he and I are – Mom repeatedly said, “I think Kim needs to see Jude because he’s just like you were when you were little, and it will just bless her socks off.”

Anyways, all that to say, we had an incredible weekend together, and I’m just pleased as punch. We had fun trying on clothes at Anthropologie, experimenting with mango-scented lipsticks, exploring the sheer wonder that is the Container Store (le sigh), and eating til we popped.  How lame am I – I didn’t bring my camera nor did I take a single picture.

We were both really impressed with Anthropologie’s window displays right now. These photos are from Anthro’s Facebook page.

I remember making little Christmas ornaments in school just like these – except these are WAY bigger than the ones I made. Cut cardboard and then painted – so gorgeous.

Kim also bought me the PRETTIEST necklace there. I can’t find the exact image online, but this is the same necklace in a different color. It’s so shiny and sparkly.

Also, at Container Store (where I could easily spend hours indulging in my desire to itemize), I picked up a roll of Elum’s gift wrap i this faux bois print. I think it will be perfect for Jude’s birthday party.

We spent a long time at Ikea, indulging in Swedish cookies and testing out their variety of pillows, looking for the right ones. Their Christmas decorations are already out, and there were some really cute ones. I also picked up one of these felt stars (in white) that have lights strung inside. It’s going to be cute for the holidays.  Admittedly, their Christmas stuff was all red white and blue, which I’m assuming in Sweden doesn’t have quite the cultural significance that it does here in the US, so it does seem really 4th of July.

Kim picked up these gorgeous Mercury-glass-esque candle holders. I’m kicking myself that I didn’t buy any. Come Christmas, they would be so gorgeous on the mantle or on the entryway table. You simply cannot beat these for the price – around $7-12 depending on the size. You could easily snatch up a bunch of them for dramatic effect for under $30.

One of my favorite things we did was test out Breadwinners’ Cafe at their Uptown location. Foodie friends have been telling me for years to go check it out, but this was the first time I’ve made it happen. And I was so glad we did. Located in a quaint old building, the decor was so enchanting what with the old brick exposed walls, long hallways, quirky little rooms, courtyards, and even rooftop terrace. These photos are from Breadwinners’ Flickr stream:

Check out these light fixtures – I LOVE them.

All in all, a great weekend. Now on to another busy week!

Kate Spade / Dallas

I forgot to post these photos I shot at the Kate Spade store in Northpark at Dallas. The sales ladies thought I was a nut job, but the store had been redone and I fell in love.  My photos didn’t turn out so hot as it was difficult to shoot in there w/ the light. Anyway, you get the idea. I wish they would’ve picked up more of the details.

Simon looks like he’s about to say the pledge of allegiance in that last photo. Ha!
