Party Planning: Peter Pan Birthday

Jude’s birthday is swiftly approaching and I have been collecting inspiration photos as I try to visualize the kind of party I want to do. I should probably call my friend Rachelle, party thrower extraordinaire. As usual, I want a fun, quirky, handmade party that is not so … character-y.

Peter Pan is one of my favorites, and is hands-down, Jude’s favorite. We watch the movie over and over again, and we also read the book practically every night (well, the simplified Disney version – not the full-on J.M. Barrie). The original Disney movie was styled by the extremely talented Mary Blair, the genius behind many of the classic Disney movies including Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, as well as the Small World attractions and other artwork around the Disney parks. Her art is so stylistically recognizable – beautiful saturated color, stylized people, 2-dimensional illustrations. I love them.

And this is how these sketches translated into imagery for the film – Mermaid Lagoon

What’s not to love about this story? The possibilities are endless — mermaids, pirates, indians, lost boys dressed in little fur outfits, and of course flying British children. I can’t wait.

Here are some more inspiration photos –
Pirate’s brew – how fun are these in the burlap?

I love these red felt feathers. I may have to make some of these.

I also like these stripey bags – they remind me of the sail on the pirate ship.

I definitely want to decorate our tree out front to be like the Lost Boys’ tree where they lived with Peter Pan. If the weather is amenable, we’ll try to do the party outside.

I also need to order some of these pre-cut felt leaves to decorate Jude’s costume.

Whew! I’m overwhelmed a little bit, but I think it’s going to be fun. I also want to make a teepee out of a leftover cardboard box we have in the garage. That would be a fun little addition to the yard!

Wyatt & Friends

Oh man, what a crazy weekend! I’ve got enough blogging material for days with all the nuttiness around here.

On Sunday, we got to attend sweet little Wyatt’s 2nd birthday. You’ll remember the train invitations –

Rachelle – Wyatt’s mommy – threw a fantastic party. She is so inspiring. And Jude was positively enthralled. I swear he was more excited about going to the “Thomas Train Party!” than Disneyland.

Look at this adorable balloon wreath Rachelle made. I LOVE this. Her details were impeccable.

Rachelle also hired this guy who has a real live train! The kids went nuts!

I designed the favor tags – inside were an engineer’s hat and a train whistle!

Oh man, was it hot. Luckily we had lots of ice cold water (fresh from Sodor Springs! hee hee) with labels also designed by moi. We did two different versions.

Also some fun matching tags for the food and beverages.

Rachelle, we had such a fun time! Thank you for letting us be a part of Wyatt’s special day!

It was a birthday weekend!

Such a great birthday, you guys. A special dinner w/ Mom and Dad and Simon at Signature Grill.

My MOST FAVORITE – creme brulee!

IMG_5769

And a special cake that Simon made all by himself. A 4-layer confection of deliciousness!

This is my boys, licking the frosting out of the pan. (Me too).

This picture makes me laugh. It kinda looks like J is popping out of that cake.

IT’S A STRIPED CAKE!!!

So we decided to take it outside. Which turned out to be a good idea in the end.

IMG_5798

Ohhh it was good.

But then …

It went downhill fast.

REAL fast.

But in all my 29 years, I don’t think I have ever had a food fight. But it was way fun! I’m thinking that we need to try that one again sometime. :)

Thank you to everyone who made my birthday so very nice!

Happy Birthday, Earl!

Yesterday was my brother Earl’s birthday, so my sister and I met up with him at Pachinko Parlor, just north of downtown. It’s a new little restaurant, kind of an asian fusion with sushi, Thai food, and other goodies. I really liked it. It’s particularly great to see funky concepts come into OKC. Pachinko Parlor is located in a part of town that’s recently been revitalized with new shops, cupcakeries, and restaurants. It’s so exciting to see – OKC just keeps getting better. I should’ve gotten an exterior shot of the place – there’s an enormous tree out front that’s pretty impressive.

Anyway, it was a nice sibling lunch – just me, Amy and Earl. I cannot remember the last time we’ve done something like that.

Afterwards, of course we had to go next door to Sara Sara Cupcakes.

I mean, what’s a birthday without cake?
