Back Home from Florida!

IMG_6271

After a high-blood-pressure-inducing traveling experience (we nearly missed our flight – we got on the plane only by the grace of God in the form of a mechanical error!), we are home safe & sound from DisneyWorld. And it was quite the adventure, to be sure.  I won’t say that I’m missing the crowds and craziness, but it really truly was a magical time and we made a lot of memories. Simon was able to join us for the last day; he was attending a real estate conference for the majority of our time there, so mostly it was just me and Jude on our own.

More on our trip this weekend when i’ve had time to resurface!

Greetings from chilly Florida!

No big blog post for today or possibly a few days due to my personal issues with paying $9.95 a day for Internet access. Boooo.

But! We are having a marvelous time exploring Disney World while Simon attends his conference. Yesterday was the Magic Kingdom; today will be Epcot. And can you believe we are here on the coldest weekend in ages here? Of course we are. So since I packed our warm weather gear (I swear the forecast said 75 degrees), we made haste to the enormous Disney store on Main Street and promptly purchased the least obnoxious sweatshirts I could find. And, of course, the least obnoxious ones are always the most expensive. Sigh.

Have a great week!

Colorado Springs

Our last day in Colorado, we went down to Colorado Springs.  I had fun memories of family vacations there as a kid, and I thought Jude would enjoy a couple of things there.  Our first stop was the Garden of the Gods.  Nice and hot, but we enjoyed climbing around on the trails and finding lizards scuttling around.

After lunch in quirky Manitou Springs, we followed the Pike’s Peak highway up to the summit.  All I could notice as we got higher and higher was the distinct lack of guardrails along the hairpin turns.

The clouds were magnificent as the thunderstorms moved in.  Actually, we were so high that the thunderstorms were below us.

This is what Jude saw at Pike’s Peak.

I couldn’t handle walking around for more than 10 minutes at the summit – the air was so thin.  When I stumbled back to the car and sat down, Simon was all, “What’s the matter with you?”  Then after he came back from exploring, he said he got it. However, the thin air must have done something to him, because he came back with a bag full of Pike’s Peak donuts. Nice!donuts

I love stumbling on little hidden gems, like this adorable ice cream shop, Little Man Ice Cream. I mean, c’mon – it just doesn’t get any better than this. Homemade ice cream and gelato are their specialties and after a yummy pizza supper at Proto’s, it’s an easy walk up the hill. I indulged in the caramel popcorn and it was delish.

PLUS! Anybody over the age of 25 will understand the nostalgia of an old-school metal playground slide. Do they even make these anymore? Will kids of the future understand that feeling of sliding down a metal slide in the heat of summer and that fast burn up the back of your legs? And the haste of which you hop up off the slide to not burn yourself further?

Afterwards, an after-dinner stroll along into the park by LoDo and down to the river.

We are SO outdoorsy

I think the last word that would ever be used to describe me is athletic.  Outdoorsy is maybe the second-to-last.  But that said, I do like being outdoors. I just don’t like being outdoors in Oklahoma where it’s 113 degrees (for realz, y’all – it’s truly that hot).  But when I get to a gorgeous place like Colorado ( or SoCal), it’s easy to see why so many people are athletic & spending a ton of time outdoors.

Jude is in outdoors heaven. The poor kid has been trapped inside almost all summer long due to Heat Dome 2011. It’s like reverse winter: in February, it was so cold that we couldn’t let him go outside. Now it’s so hot, it’s the same story.  Anyway, he’s living the dream here, running and playing and talking about “climbing the mountains, Mom!”

On Monday we drove out to Red Rocks Park and saw the famous amphitheatre. Can I just tell you that I nearly died walking from waaaaay down below just to get to the base of the amphitheatre? And then nearly died again as we hauled it to the top? But wow – the view was totally worth it.  The sun was totally roasting hot on us as we ambled around the amphitheatre and on the way down, Simon shed his shirt (lucky – boys have all the luck) and Jude decided he needed to do the same.

As I had gotten dressed that morning in my gingham shirt, metallic Sperry boat shoes and rolled up jeans, Simon looked at me and said, “Aren’t you going to be, um, hot? Don’t you think you might be comfier wearing shorts?” I looked at him and said, “Crazy, I have all of two pairs of shorts, both of which you call my ‘booty shorts’ and/or sometimes ‘boudoir shorts’.  So do you think that I even bothered to pack them?!” Heck no! So, yes, in the morning, I was roasting hot miserable. There was even an emergency attempt to purchase shorts at Old Navy, which was futile. But, as we headed off into the mountains towards Vail, the temperature dropped from 90 degrees to 60, and we were all, “OMG, we remember what this weather feels like.”

Vail was stunningly beautiful and we remarked how much we’d love to return.  Now, wouldn’t you know that it started to pour rain the minute we got there.  All of a sudden, I was suddenly grateful for my longish sleeves and jeans. The enclosed gondolas were running, so we hopped one of those and headed up the mountain at Lionshead.  By the time we got to the top, the rain stopped and it was beautiful again.

Uhhh, yeah. So, um, who was so not prepared to be hiking in the mountains? Blondie with the gold BOAT SHOES AND THE LOUIS VUITTON.

Told ya I’m not outdoorsy.  I so don’t have the wardrobe for this kind of stuff.  :-
