Surviving the first trimester of pregnancy in style - www.pencilshavingsstudio.com

Anthropologie Matepe dress (my absolute favorite piece right now)

Ohhhh first trimester style. You are so tricky. Now that I’m inching out of the first trimester (longest summer everrrrr), I thought I’d do a little roundup of surviving it stylishly.

Maternity “fashion” when I was pregnant with Jude 7 years ago(!) was a joke. I felt like I was drowning in a sea of terribly ugly and uncomfortable clothes from the get-go. I was beyond bloated and so I was in maternity pants well before the first trimester ended. And don’t even talk to me about those awful belly bands. I hated them then and still hate them now. By the time Jude was born, I wanted to burn every last item of maternity clothing I had ever touched and I felt completely out of touch with my pre-baby self. I feel like it’s pretty important to feel good about yourself and for someone who really loves clothes, pregnancy threw me for a major loop.

For this go around, I have been determined to get the most out of my non-maternity wardrobe for as long as possible and to stay true to my pre-baby style. Luckily the seasons have corresponded well, and with the warm summer weather I’ve been able to get a lot out of existing maxi dresses, along with a few new pieces to help me feel my best for a few different events.  Comfort is key above all else – because it’s been so hot, I’ve wanted lightweight clothes that skim my body and nothing too clingy. And there’s been lots of napping, so comfy cool pajamas (my absolute faves – have you tried them?) have been awesome too.  But with all this “I look like I’ve eaten alllll the donuts” belly bloat, I’ve been avoiding my go-to tailored cinch-waist items for things with a little more room.

  1.  JCrew Colorblock Tunic
  2. Anthropologie Calla Tunic
  3. Boden Linen pants
  4. Gap mix fabric racerback dress
  5. Gap stripe dobby shirtdress

I’ve already had a couple of moments of frustration when things don’t fit they way they’re supposed to (or, erm, the way they USED to). Last week I tried on my favorite Paige jeans on a cool day, and found that they absolutely definitely will not button. Stuff’s gettin’ real!

What were your must-haves when you were pregnant? I’d love to hear in the comments. Oh, and also be sure to check out Oh Joy’s Dressing the Bump series for some really cute videos.
