Midi skirt: a flattering shape for every body

Midi skirts: the silhouette that flatters every body

A midi skirt is one of my favorite pieces for fall – or really, for any season – and is an absolute staple of my personal style. It’s a totally glamorous piece that can get a ton of wear — because who doesn’t love the idea of swishing about in Christian Dior-New Look-esque skirts? This look is so crazy versatile, and can be easily dressy, modern, quirky, etc. It’s all in how you style it.

I’ve noticed midi skirts popping up here and there in shops but my current favorites are from Asos.  Remember this funky little gingham version I wore for family photos? I also picked up this ponte knit one below a few months ago and I absolutely love it. I get more compliments on it than maybe anything I own – plus with the ponte, it’s as easy as a tshirt dress.

HOW TO WORK A MIDI SKIRT

1. Look for high contrast
Consider your materials. Is your midi skirt silk? Pair it with a chunky cableknit sweater. Is it a more casual ponte material? Try pairing it with a chambray button-down.

2. Accessorize
Kitten heels, chunky pumps, flats, sandals – anything goes. Although personally, with the  length that’s mid-calf, I like a heel of some kind to give me more height and add to the dramatic look.  There’s a high frump potential with this look – you *can* wear flats with it, but the best bet will be something with a heel.

3. Pair it with something fitted
You’re working a more tailored look here, so make sure that your top is fitted to a T.  With a big, voluminous bottom half, your top needs to be slim and streamlined. This is not the time to try out a blousy peasant top.

4. You’re not in Costume
To keep this look from looking straight-up Donna Reed, you’ve got to modernize it. Look for unusual materials (leather, anyone?) or try an unexpected shoe with it.

How ’bout you? Are you into the midi skirt trend?

with love,
Rachel
