I’m all for seasonal decorating, but…

I’m wondering if this isn’t a wee bit much.

Jude and I walked past this house tonight in our neighborhood. It’s the real live Bates Motel. Notice the flying skeleton. And the wonky shutters on the upper dormer windows – really? Who bothers to put out messed-up shutters? These people are hardcore.  Lotsa  cobwebs. Oh, and if you can’t tell, there’s a multitude of hangman’s nooses hanging from their abundant trees. I guess this is supposed to be the freaky house in the neighborhood.

Hmmm. Interesting. Not for me, but I guess it’s kinda fun to see what people come up with!

How ’bout you – what do you do to decorate seasonally?

I’m ready to go buy pumpkins and get out all my fall decorating items. October is my 2nd favorite month, and looks like it’s going to be a fun one this year. Simon turns 30(!) and we’re trying to go to NYC for his bday. Jude will turn 3 and I’m planning a Peter Pan party which is going to be tons-o-fun. And — good news! — I read today at USA Today that there is no longer a pumpkin shortage. Bring on the pumpkin goodies!

Peter Pan? Oh boy. What a fun book! I smell scavenger hunt and making your yard into Neverland. :)

How can you go so far as to hang a flying skeleton and broken shutters but not put gravestones and zombies crawling out of the ground in the front yard? Shameful.

I don’t do much seasonal decorating. I have a hurricane jar with pinecones and osage oranges on a shelf in my living room, but my kids will destroy anything within their reach so I don’t bother. This year there will probably be a couple strands of lights and maybe a wreath at Christmas. The kids will carve pumpkins in a few weeks and if I get around to making a Halloween wreath I’ll put it on the door, but that’s about it. Most decorations stay outside although I’d like to be able to do more.

Happy early birthdays to Jude and Simon!

I semi-dread Christmas. Last year was a constant picking-of-ornaments-off-the-tree battle and it made me nutso. I’m wondering how this year will go. When I was little, Mom just put small toys on the tree to decorate (like McDonalds happy meal toys) so that way it wouldn’t make her bonkers when I took them off. Smart lady, I’m thinking now.
